GCM | Hakka Worker Ministry

Opportunity Overview:

A GCM Hakka Ministry Worker is dedicated to evangelistic efforts in Hakka areas, the development of Hakka churches, and the partnership with local Hakka believers. They would find creative ways to do outreach and discipleship. They must be independent, long-term goal oriented, and able to seek out connections with others in their pursuit of spreading the Gospel in Hakka communities.

Countries:  GCM

Terms:  Long Term (4+ years)

Responsibilities:

  • Language and Culture Learning: A Hakka Ministry Worker begins by learning Mandarin and Taiwanese culture as a member of the GCM field. For beginners, this includes 2 years of language and culture study in Taichung, Taiwan. After reaching a certain level of Mandarin proficiency, the worker transitions to learning Hakka. Those with prior language or cultural experience will first be assessed to determine how much time they need for further learning before the internship phase.
  • Internship: After the language and culture study phase, the Hakka Ministry Worker enters an internship with a local church in a Hakka area or one focused on Hakka ministry. They must be willing to serve under local leadership with a teachable attitude. During this internship, the worker will also complete an ethnography project to deepen understanding of Hakka culture.
  • Connections: Building relationships is essential in Hakka culture. The worker will spend their first and second terms networking with local Hakka pastors, the Hakka seminary, and the Hakka Christian Association. These connections are crucial for meaningful engagement and effective ministry within the community.
  • Long-Term Commitment: Hakka ministry requires long-term dedication. With less than 0.5% of the 4 million Hakka in Taiwan knowing Christ, the need is great. A Hakka Ministry Worker must have a deep calling, a heart for the Hakka people, and perseverance to serve the Lord faithfully among this unreached group.
