A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Southern Philippines on Monday, June 8 at 07:37 a.m. local time, affecting communities across the region. Local news outlets report at least 45 people have died, over 630 are injured, and some 43,000 families have been displaced. The numbers continue to rise.
Aftershocks are happening daily (many above Intensity 5.0), and local residents are too traumatized to sleep indoors. Families are moving mats onto the streets to sleep at night. Power is intermittent, water pressure is nearly gone, and infrastructure damage is extensive.
The damage across the city is significant. Buildings have collapsed, streets are cracked open, hospitals have been damaged, and many families are displaced. The poorest neighborhoods have been hit hardest, especially coastal communities where many are now homeless.
Our team is currently delivering urgent aid: food, water, shelter (tents and ropes), hygiene kits, emergency supplies for nighttime, and medication to hundreds of families across all ministry areas. We are also planning to drill three deep water wells since existing wells were compromised in these areas. But the need far exceeds what we can address alone.
We invite you to pray for and give to the families affected by this calamity. Your gift directly funds the relief efforts happening on the ground right now. Thank you for your generosity. Your compassion helps us respond to the physical and spiritual needs of the communities we serve.
