Spiritual Hunger in the Himilayas
On a recent trip to Nepal, SEND missionary “W” encountered the extraordinary work of God through the steadfastness of one Nepali man. This is his story.
Encountering Jesus
I'd like to introduce you to Suresh. His story represents what we witnessed again and again during our 10-day journey through Thailand, Myanmar, and Nepal, where we met with 31 local believers like him.
Suresh grew up in a poor village northeast of Kathmandu, Nepal. At age 14, he encountered Jesus for the first time through Nepali praise music. Immediately, he began sharing his faith with friends, even though it was a dangerous time to be a Christian, with strong Maoist influence in his community.
A Vision from God
Every morning, Suresh would climb a nearby mountain to pray. During those times, he had visions of children and families being transformed by Jesus, though he didn’t yet know how he was meant to be part of that vision. He waited faithfully for 10 years until he sensed the Lord saying, “Now is the time.”
The Vision Come to Life
With remarkable sacrifice and support, Suresh and his wife launched a kindergarten. She sold her gold jewelry, and a friend donated a house to use as the school. Suresh built all the furniture himself from scrap wood. That first year, they welcomed 13 students.
Their model is remarkable: all science, math, and technology classes are taught in English, while all socials are taught in Nepali.
Today, the school serves 97 students and has helped establish seven house churches in neighboring valleys.
Recently, the government threatened to shut the school down because of its Christian foundation. Suresh responded with grace and clarity, demonstrating that they follow the national curriculum and presenting testimonies from families, most of whom are Hindu, about how the school has brought real hope and help to their community. The government backed down, at least for now.
Suresh’s story is just one example of what we saw throughout our trip: God moving through ordinary people in extraordinary ways.
Strategy for Nepal
In the coming years, we at SEND plan to serve in Nepal by coming alongside trusted international partners whose vision for the gospel is already bearing fruit. As the government moves toward a more aggressive Hindu posture and the impact on churches becomes clearer, we want to strengthen the hands of local leaders, care for them well, and help propel forward their work, especially in training church planters and deepening the discipleship of believers. In a setting where pressure and persecution may increase, our desire is to help build a depth of faith that will not fail when it is tested.
