Spain has had a complex relationship with religion. Its history is dotted with religiously motivated wars, and for centuries, Spain was the country the Roman Catholic Church could count on. Catholic traditions form the foundation of major life events from the birth of a baby to holidays and festivals. And 94% of Spaniards are baptized members of the church. Yet the shadow of the Inquisition still looms darkly. Religious freedom is a fairly recent phenomenon—the Bible has been a prohibited book for most of the last 500 years with only 25 years of freedom.
