Czechs are private and formal. They enjoy visiting but rarely invite people into their homes. Most socializing takes place at pubs, restaurants and coffeehouses. Czechs only use first names with family and very close friends. When conversing, they stand about an arm’s length apart and maintain eye contact. They are very respectful and often address others by their professional titles and last names.

Czechs make family their top priority. They also value education, modesty, humor and a job well-done. Czechs dress-up for cultural events and disapprove of improper attire.

Traditional Czech food consists mainly of meat, potatoes and dumplings which are very heavy and difficult to prepare. Many Czechs now eat more vegetables. When eating, they keep both hands, but not elbows, above the table.

Czechs share a love of nature. Although most (75%) live in urban areas, they find ways to escape to the country. A large number of families also own cottages. They enjoy camping, hiking, gathering mushrooms and berries, and snow skiing. The national hockey team has won several international competitions. Czechs also take pride in their support of the arts.
