Geography
Croatia, about the size of West Virginia, arcs in a giant “C” across the Balkan Peninsula. Half of the country rests on the Adriatic Sea with over 1,000 islands hugging the coastline. Split, the second largest city, sits on the southern coast and was a resort city of the Romans. The northeast consists of the Pannonian Plain and mountains dominate the central region. Zagreb, the capitol city, is situated inland on the Sava River. The climate varies from region to region—Mediterranean on the coast; cold, snowy winters and mild summers in the mountains; and cold, dry winters and hot summers on the Plain.
