For centuries Croatians fought for national independence and now that they have it, they celebrate it. Croatian culture earns its unique flavor from the many ethnicities that call the country home and its various geographical regions.

Croatians prize family, education and having a good career. They enjoy visiting and are sociable and hospitable. Visiting is even important in the workplace and coworkers often socialize after meetings. When visiting a home, guests bring a gift to the host who opens it right away. Food is often served and it is impolite to refuse. Meals tend to be informal and the conversation is lively.

Croatia has many notable achievements on the international stage. It boasts of some of the best bread in the world with Povatica, a nut roll, and Strukli, a cheese or egg filled pastry, is a Croatian staple. Soccer is the most popular sport and the national team competes well on the international scene. And Croatia is the birthplace of the necktie, the Dalmatian (which some hotly contest), and the mechanical pencil.
