Geography & Culture

At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), Russia is by far the largest country in the world, covering more than a ninth of the Earth's land area. Russia is also the ninth most populous nation in the world with 142 million people. It extends across the whole of northern Asia and 40% of Europe, spanning 9 time zones (changed from 11 in March 2010) and incorporating a wide range of environments and landforms.

Moscow is a major political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation center of the world, Moscow is a global city. It is also the seventh largest city proper in the world, a megacity. The population of Moscow (as of 1 January 2010) is 10,562,099. Moscow is a fast-paced capital. People lead busy lives as they fight the masses of people and transportation. Working in the business world is aggressive, and friendships of trust do not come easily. As the Gospel spreads, pray for believers to shine forth the love and grace of Christ to the people of Moscow.

The Buryat people of southern Siberia are friendly, strongly family focused, and Asian in culture and ethnic background. They value land, coming from a nomadic heritage. Tibetan Buddhism, their folk religion, is animistic, and includes worship of the spirits of lakes, hills, and trees. Though they are encased in Russia, their culture conflicts and creates barriers to trusting Christ.

The Central Black Soil Region is mostly rural, yet there are five major cities and a population of 8 million people (with very, very few churches). In contrast to its fertile soil, the spiritual condition of people is dry and lifeless like a desert. The CBSR is one of the most spiritually poor regions in the entire former Soviet Union and less than 0.2% of the population is Evangelical Christian. Secular materialism brings dissatisfaction and many struggle with alcohol, drugs, and family issues.
