Disillusionment with the slow rate of political and economic progress has greatly influenced general attitudes. Poverty remains a major problem and people who earn university degrees usually emigrate. A strong majority of Romanians favor closer ties with and greater resemblance to the west. There is a growing sense of hope, however, as recent elections have been peaceful.
Romanians tend to be distant and formal and have a strong sense of privacy. They value modesty and respect age and position. Maintaining eye contact during conversation is a sign of honesty.
Romanians enjoy visiting and sports, particularly soccer.
