Geography
“Land of fields” -- that’s what Poland means. The North European Plain dominates Poland’s northern and central landscape. This plain, and the lack of natural barriers, has made Poland a virtual highway for invading armies. Two mountain ranges, the Carpathian and the Sudeten, sit along the southern border. Forests cover another quarter of the country. Poland is slightly smaller than New Mexico and shares its borders with Germany (west), Czech Republic (southwest), Slovakia (south), Ukraine (southeast), Belarus (east), and Lithuania and Russia (northeast). Poland has a temperate climate and the weather can change in an instant.
