The Spiritual Need in Poland

A recent global survey published in Evangelical Missions Quarterly declared Poland as the neediest nation in the world for gospel witness today!   Though the survey could not accurately gauge the survey could not accurately gauge the spiritual needs of some closed-access nations in the Middle East, it yet graphically illustrates the vast number of Polish cities, towns and villages without a viable witness of the gospel story. Evangelical Christians in the nation of Poland account for just 0.15% of the population.

The Europe of the 21st century is considered by many to be the most un-reached region on earth.  And despite the shaking off of a Communist past and the entry into the European Union, spiritual darkness almost entirely veils North Central Europe (NCE) from the light that is found in Jesus Christ.

SEND International has taken up the challenge to bring the gospel to the people of Poland.  SEND missionaries work in partnership with the Baptist Union of Poland to plant new churches in towns and cities with almost no gospel witness.  SEND’s currently ministers in cities in the South East of Poland.

A Country in Transition

Since Roman Catholicism was brought to Poland when Prince Mieszko I was converted, it has become the very fabric of Polish society, life and politics. The traditional church was the custodian of Polish language and culture throughout various foreign occupations. It holds deep national, as well as religious, significance.

Why minister in Poland, when most Poles consider themselves Christian? According to Scripture, being religious is not enough. Like the Jews of Paul's day, many Poles have "a zeal for God but not in accordance with knowledge" (Rom 10:2).

Today holds a unique opportunity for ministry in Poland. The country is in transition. Many are disillusioned by the recent strong political activity of the traditional church. As the economy strengthens, many fill this void with materialism. This transition provides a chance to offer the Polish people lasting answers to their real needs.

After years of communist oppression and foreign occupation, Poland has two principal needs: planting vibrant, indigenous churches and equipping leaders. Poland needs Polish-led churches to bring Biblical principles into the everyday lives of the people. Years of foreign domination have also prevented the equipping of spiritual leaders. Poland needs more leaders trained in the Word of God and able to shepherd.
