Okutama Bible Chalet - Japan
Immediately after Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami, SEND launched the Japan Earthquake Recovery fund to meet relief and recovery needs. Christians gave generously and we soon met our funding goals.
But the people of Japan need more than just bricks and blankets. Now more than ever, they need a place to relax away from the worries of life. Kids need a place to go and just be kids. People desperate for peace need a place to meet the Prince of Peace.
For 50 years, Okutama Bible Chalet (OBC) has been such a place. Through OBC, more than 3,500 campers hear the gospel each year and camping is one of the most effective modes of evangelism in Japan.
The camp ministry of OBC plays an essential role in our church planting work. Many young people come to camp to have fun. Many find much more in Jesus Christ - salvation and growth in faith through discipleship training. Churches follow up with these young believers when camp is over and use that opportunity to reach out to their families.
The Next Generation for Christ, the official name of this OBC project, consists of replacing an old 1960’s building that is beyond renovation. By replacing that building, OBC can stop turning away campers and provide space for an additional 1,000 campers each year – 1,000 more young Japanese will have the opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel!
The project is not finished. We still need your generous gifts to make the Next Generation for Christ possible.
