Macedonia,
roughly the size of the state of Vermont, forms part of
the Balkan Peninsula. Its official name is "The Republic
of Macedonia." This title is contested by the nation of
Greece, however, since "Macedonia" is also the name of a
major Greek province. Largely because of this controversy,
Macedonia joined the United Nations as "The Former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia."
Bounded by the nations of Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, and
Albania, Macedonia is a mountainous country laced with numerous
rivers. The capital city is Skopje. As of 2002, the population
was estimated to be 2, 054, 800, including Macedonians,
Albanians, Turks, Serbs, and Gypsies.
