SEND's
Ministry in Japan
The ministry
in Japan is focused on church planting. After WW II, GI's who had
been part of the occupation forces returned to Japan with a passion
to see Japanese reached with the Gospel. SEND now has a large team
of missionaries, staff and teachers.
SEND does evangelism
and church planting in several ways. In areas where there is no
national church, SEND works independently. SEND has also worked
under the direction of Japanese church leaders. SEND's preference
is to partner with the local church whenever possible.
If you
have read the cultural section, you know that evangelism in this
soul hardened country is difficult and slow. SEND uses a wide variety
of approaches, such as music, hobbies, house to house visitation
and teaching English to make contact and open discussions with Japanese.
People will normally call themselves a "seeker" before they consider
becoming a Christian.
Learning to
speak English has such a high value for most Japanese that it is
our single most effective tool to build deep relationships. Commonly,
it is in the context of these trusting relationships that a Japanese
will become a seeker. English classes often include Bible reading
and discussion as an intentional way to launch into spiritual discussions.
Men are particularly hard to reach because they often work six days
a week and play hard on Sunday.
Baptism is a
very serious and significant step for the Japanese, because they
so value fitting into the group and following traditions. Baptism,
by its very nature, places them outside of the group they have belonged
to all their life, but inside the group of believers.

Camp
Programming
A
Japanese person thinks long and hard about accepting Jesus because
it is outside of the norm, away from the group he values, and is
individualistic. Camping is often strategic in the process. Camping
takes them away from their normal life for an extended period of
time to reflect on the claims of Jesus Christ.
