Another Cooperating Opportunity

On December 10, we will have another opportunity to join with 12 (WOW!) other churches to do an outreach program in the Dongshi Town Plaza. We will have another Taiwanese style bazaar in the afternoon with all the churches running different booths: selling food, playing games, and counseling. During the bazaar time there will be performance from several local schools and groups. In the evening, there will be a Christmas program. Several churches from Dongshi will have different "shows" and we also invited some Christian entertainers to participate in the evening program. One of the them will give his testimony. The Christian Taiwanese opera was designed to attract older audience; this time we hope to catch the attention from a younger crowd. We and our church folks are excited and looking forward to witness God's amazing grace again!

As for bazaar, you can imagine what Mabel is busy doing now. She is again baking more cakes for sale at the church booth. However, since there will be other items to be sold, she will not be baking as many loaves as the last time. Instead of selling the items ourselves, we would like to be able to talk with more folks this time.

Pray for God's guiding opportunities! We pray that more people are ready to accept Christ this time and some will end up worshipping at a church close to their home.

Chinese Christian Opera comes to Dongshi

Recently a Christian Opera came to Dongshi. The opera was about Joseph's colorful coat. The event started with a Taiwanese style bazaar with churches running all the booths. It was scheduled to start at 4 p.m. But, around noon the sky just opened up and rain poured down. The rain got so heavy that it was like fog! The churches had been praying and planning for this event for many months. How could it not happen due to the rain!

GOD IS FAITHFUL!! At around 1:45 p.m., the rain stopped and by 2 p.m. the sun was out and the ground, the stage, and all the booths began to dry out!!! The churches were able to start setting up for the Opera Bazaar. The setting up went very well, and by 4 p.m. everything was dry! By night time the moon and stars were out! Isn't God great!!!

During the opera the whole Dongshi town plaza was filled with people. Most of the audienced seemed to pay close attention to the opera and stayed to the very end. We had received so many positive, impressive, and encouraging comments afterwards. Some even commented that these performers are more professional than the well-known opera groups!

We also praise God for the fact that many churches worked together to host this event. This was really a great testimony to the folks in the area. It was a great opportunity to demonstrate our unity in Christ. Our Dongshi Baptist Church members were greatly encouraged and excited to see how the different churches could work together in such a united effort. It has been almost twenty years since the churches join together to do an outreach ministry such like this!

Free From Fear

Mrs. Jian has been living in FenYuan Township for about the last five years. Through past poor choices she finds herself homeless again. Even though she has two children, she does not have a relationship with them; she is without a family support system to help her. She came to our church a few months ago with a keen interest in spiritual matters. It was obvious from the beginning that God was drawing her to know more about Jesus. Less than 0.4 % of the residents of Fen Yuan believe in Jesus, with probably half that number attending church each week.

Mrs. Jian grew up in ChangHua County and was only able to finish her 6th grade education before she began working. She has been an active worshipper of the spirits, and is very fearful of them. After coming to our church, she indicated a desire to know the Lord. I started meeting with her weekly to help her understand the basics of the faith and prepare her for baptism.

During our weekly Bible study I learned about some of her struggles and worldview. One day when she was on her way home, she had motorcycle trouble and told her neighbor, a folk religion medium, about it. The neighbor said that her problems were twofold. First, she was being chased by the spirits of her two aborted children. They were trying to get revenge on her so she needed to offer a sacrifice to them. Second, she had sinned against the spirits of someone who had drowned in the local river where she had urinated. The medium said she would also need to offer a sacrifice to the spirit of the drowning victim to appease him.

She was sincerely afraid of these spirits that she believed she had sinned against. I was able to lead her in prayer to ask for forgiveness and confess her sins of aborting her children. She was relieved to know there is a biblical explanation for the things that scare her.

Mrs. Jian has been enthusiastic about sharing her new faith with others. She has no other Christian friends, except the few that she meets with weekly at church. Recently we encouraged the believers at our church to get training in using Bible stories to share with non-Christian friends and family. Mrs. Jian eagerly joined our Bible story training and came this week to learn the story of creation. When she left church that Wednesday afternoon, she immediately told this story to two other non-Christians. By Sunday, she had already told eight different people and had their signatures to show who they were! She is eager to grow and wants to be a faithful messenger of God’s story.

During our weekly Bible studies it became clear that Mrs. Jian was ready to follow the Lord in baptism. We have plans to hold a baptism in December and Mrs. Jian will be the first one to come up and share her testimony. Her most significant experience of the Lord, she says, is that she no longer fears the spirits who tormented her before, and now has peace.

Pray for Mrs. Jian as she is receiving training for telling Bible stories to share her faith with non-believing friends and neighbors. Pray that she would be a growing disciple of the Lord and fruitful in her witness to others.

Would you consider whether God is calling you to join SEND International in Taiwan to help us reach many more people like Mrs. Jian in one of the 60 communities of Vision 119? Find out more.

"After we die, there's nothing, right?"

I've taken up the habit of swimming three days a week--Monday, Wednesday, and Friday! Anyone who knows me will rejoice, because my history is littered with broken resolutions to do regular exercise. Gratefully, this looks like one routine which will stick!

Monday I felt the Lord nudging me to finish my laps early and go talk with a woman in the spa which I usually finish with. So I joined Chang Mama, and struck up a conversation. I discovered that she's a pretty free-thinking Grandma by Taiwan standards; she said her grandchildren were Christians, but she was fine with that. So I asked her if Buddha (who she said she worshiped) was going to prepare a place for her in Heaven. She said, "Oh no, Buddha just helps me to be more loving. Besides, after we die there's nothing, right? So it really doesn't matter." "If there really is a hell, then it certainly does matter," I said.

In the next few minutes I had the privilege of sharing the Good News with Chang Mama. I shared how hell was a place prepared by God for the devil and his fallen angels. But that when Adam and Eve sinned (and were tricked by the devil), all of mankind fell into sin. We all fall short of God's standard, so someday our sin will have to be punished. We deserve to go to hell. But God loves us so much, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him, will not perish and go to hell, but will have eternal life. Jesus died for us, descended into hell, and on the third day rose again! After 40 days with his disciples, He acsended into Heaven, and is there preparing a place for us-- for ALL who have believed in Him."

Chang Mama asked so sincerely, "You mean we have to wait three days before we get to go to Heaven?"

"Oh, no," I said with a smile, "Jesus is waiting for us when we die, and takes us right away into Heaven with Him!"

Then Chang Mama asked me when I came to swim. She said she'll come back then on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I looked for her today, and didn't see her. But the Lord's Spirit is at work in her heart, I believe. Let's pray for her, that God will cause her to seek Him, and find Him.

God answers prayer! Praise God for those grandchildren who have certainly been praying that their grandmother will come to know Jesus. What a joy to be a part of the answer to that prayer. Even so, YOU who pray for Chang Mama, for the people of Taiwan, for Vision 119, for Mark and me, are so important to God's Kingdom coming to Taiwan, and lives being changed through Jesus.

Thank you! --Ruth

Joy and Tears

Praise the Lord that in May we had three ladies accept Christ as their personal Savior. However, only one is attending our church on a regular basis. The other two are facing opposition from their families. For their protection, we will be using their initials only.

JF’s mother is a Christian and has been encouraging her to go to church. However, her husband does not want her to do so. For whatever reason, she came to our church one Sunday in May and wanted to trust Jesus as her Savior. Afterward, she has not been able to come anymore. We were told that her husband got very upset with her for coming to church. Please pray for JF that God will open door for her.

YN is a co-worker of a Christian woman from our church. This woman has been sharing her testimony with YN and told her how real Jesus was to her. YN’s mother is a very strong idol worshipper. Her mother is so superstitious that she seeks answers from the idol for every decision. One time when her husband was very sick, she had to ask the idol if she should be taking him to see a doctor.

YN used to burn incense and worship the ancestors and idols everyday. This was her responsibility at home. However, due to her mother’s severe actions, and seemingly out-of-control superstition, she did not want to worship the ancestors and idols anymore. The woman from our church told her to pray to Jesus for a way out. She did and one day she told her mom that she would not continue the incense burning and worship. YN was anticipating a major fight with her mom. To her surprise, YN found her mom reacting to this ordeal in a very calm way. She has not burned incense at home since then.

She started to wonder about Jesus. One day she came into church to have a chat with Mabel. It was that day that she invited Jesus to be her Savior. We knew the road ahead would not be easy for her; we have to pray hard! YN was able to come to church a few times after her conversion. But recently, her mom has been asking her to do house chores at the time she wanted to leave for church. YN is facing a very real spiritual battle. Please pray that God will also provide a way out for her to come to church.

Taiwanese Opera with a Christian Theme

We are moving full force in preparation for the upcoming Taiwanese opera being performed in the Dongshi area on August 6. This is the first time in over two decades that churches in the area joined together to put out this kind of evangelistic event.

We were moved by the testimony from Liu Nan Fang, the leader of this opera group. She is definitely in love with the Taiwanese opera culture and has devoted her life to studying and writing songs for the opera. In the past 10 years she has written a few operas using Bible stories. This is her way to reach out to those performers. According to Ms. Liu, many Taiwanese would not listen to a Bible message but would listen to an opera. The Taiwanese opera brings back many golden memories to the folks of the older generation. Many cry as soon as they watch the performance. The charisma of the opera captures many hearts. We were told that the performers themselves were touched by the Bible stories.

The performance in Dongshi is about the colorful robe of Joseph and emphasizes forgiveness. Many performers often cry as they sing this line due to their own struggles with this issue. Pray that these performers as well as those in the audience will be touched by God’s grace that they will submit themselves to Him for His forgiveness.

We praise the Lord that in addition to the performance at night, we will have a bazaar in the afternoon. Most of the churches in the area will have a booth to introduce their church and sell goods to raise funds for the performance. Our goal is demonstrate that all churches are one in Christ. Pray that we will be able to work well with one another and some of the folks who attend the activity on that day will end up going to some of the churches.

Chinese Churches Help With Japan Relief

The Chinese Christian Relief Association recently sent a small team to Japan exploring the long term options for assisting local churches in their relief efforts. Last week they visited four churches which are strategically located. Christianity in the disaster area, according to recent reports, is measured at 0.1-0.2%. Churches in the hardest-hit places average 20 members which means helping their communities on their own would be overwhelming. CCRA is thinking about building more permanent centers of relief for the coming month and maybe two years to assist the local churches with some professional personnel and logistics to coordinate local relief efforts. Through this, Chinese believers can extend the same love, care and expertise they received through the Puli Earthquake of September 1999. Tina Lin, a missionary from Taiwan with SEND International, helps together with support from her church’s convention in Northwest Tokyo to regularly bring people into the disaster area for two weeks per month.

Discovering Partners in Ministry to Taiwan

The Harbours rejoice in the Lord's goodness and the many blessings they have enjoyed this year of home service. He has seen them safely over countless miles on the road and in the air. He has given them strength and joy, times of refreshing with so many precious family members, friends, and supporters. Their ministry to their supporting churches, and to several churches new to them, has focused on Vision 119, the vision God has given SEND of Taiwan--"Calling for 119 workers to plant 60 churches in towns along Old Route 1 and Route 19 in Taiwan."

Hallelujah! The Lord is at work, raising up several who are interested in coming to join the Vision 119 ministry in Taiwan. As people discern that God is calling them to join Vision 119 in Taiwan and they join SEND, we will post their names for prayer as they prepare to go. For now, there is one couple who is actively doing their deputation ministry (support discovery--sharing their ministry to Taiwan and waiting on God to raise up financial and prayer partners)--please join us in praying for Ver and Melody Garrido; they are preparing to go to Taiwan by August 2011; pray for their full support to come in.

Mark and Ruth praise God for each person and family on their support team. Missions is truly a joint effort. May the Lord do a mighty work in Taiwan, prepare hearts for Himself, strengthen and guide the SEND missionary team there, empower the Church to bring in a mighty harvest of souls for Himself.May the veil of darkness be ripped away from over the nation, and people freely come to Christ.

Honoring the Ancestors

Many Chinese think that Christians do not honor their passed relatives or ancestors. They are afraid that if their children become Christians, they will not be remembered or “worshipped” after they die. Therefore, they refuse to believe in Jesus and have no desire for their children to come to know Christ. This is especially true for the Hakka who hold so dearly to worshiping their ancestors.

We are thankful that in the past several years, more and more Christians have become aware of this problem. As the result, more churches are observing a corporate ancestor memorial service around the Tomb Sweeping Day (ancestral memorial day). Our church has been observing the corporate memorial service since 2009.

The memorial service includes three aspects: lighting candles, pouring water, and presenting flowers. The main idea behind the lighting of the candle is to ask God to help us so that our lives will shine before the world, to bring glory to God and goodness to people.

Pouring of the water signifies the remembrance of where we come from – our ancestors; but most importantly, the source of life – Jehovah God. There is a Chinese saying, “when you drink the water, think of the source where the water comes from.”

Presentation of the flowers is to remember the good conduct of our ancestors –like the lingering fragrance of flowers. It is our prayer that our conduct be just as good and fragrant so that our descendants will be able to follow.

Worth Waking Up For

My phone rang early one Monday morning in February—could I accompany the FAITH evangelism team for visitation that afternoon? It was my day off, but the “call” beckoned strongly. 2 Timothy 4:2 replayed in my mind as I crawled out from the comfort of my bed that chilly morning—“Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season….”

Later, I talked with fellow SEND missionary, Ruth Harbour, who was conducting the intensive two-day FAITH evangelism training with 20 trainees from different churches. “Do you have somebody to visit among your contacts,” she asked on the phone. I thought about Susan, a teacher from a local elementary school who had been attending our weekly English class and Bible study. “Could she be home?” I knew she would be visiting her mother-in-law during their long winter break. I spent that morning praying and preparing.

I reported for “duty” after lunch. Ruth partnered me with Sandy, a member of our church. I called Susan, expecting no response but surprisingly, she was at home and was excited to have us visit.

At Susan’s house we were greeted with a welcoming smile and some fruit and tea. Susan’s two young sons were with their nanny, and her husband, also a teacher, had reported to school so Susan was alone and free to talk. After some introductions and initial conversation, Sandy began by asking the opening question: “In your personal opinion, how can a person have true peace and joy or have the hope of heaven?” After hearing Susan’s unsure answer, we asked her permission to share how she could have real peace and joy and the hope of heaven. We had a captive audience and I proceeded by sharing with her each of the gospel points. At the end, when I asked, “Would you like to receive Jesus into your heart, have real peace and joy and have the hope of heaven in your life?” With misty eyes and a sweet smile she answered, “Yes!” She then prayed phrase by phrase the prayer of faith in Jesus.

Halleluia! This was certainly worth waking up for!

Heaven Keeps Celebrating!

Asir, Cathy, Grace and Ginger went through Faith Evangelism training last year. Emily, who was not a Christian, has been coming to church with her Christian husband Marco for over six months. We could have shared with her the gospel a long time ago, but we wanted one of the people who went through the evangelism training to share with her.

We prayed and waited for the right time (there were several obstacles along the way), and finally the Lord opened the opportunity for the gospel to be shared with her. On January 9, right after our church’s love feast, Joy gathered Asir, Cathy, Grace and Ginger and asked them to be ready to share the gospel with Emily. They were eager to do so!

Each one of them shared the different points of the gospel and Emily listened well and interacted with us. We could feel the Holy Spirit working in our midst. Finally she said that she was willing to accept Jesus in her life. Joy asked Cathy to lead her in prayer. We rejoiced with the angels in heave for another soul saved!

But the story didn’t end there because on January 12, Weini, whose husband meets with Victor for Bible study, told Victor that she wanted to make the decision to accept the Lord too. She said, “Just like what Emily did last Sunday!” Wow, what could beat that?!

Do you remember the "little maid" who send Naaman to visit Elisha and be healed? God still uses maids today to reach people with the good news. Praise God that an Indonesian housemaid, a Christian, led her whole Taiwanese employer's family to the Lord. This was the most welcoming news when our team arrived in Chiayi City, Taiwan, to start a new church plant. In addition, Thai workers who had been in that city returned to Thailand as believers and have already planted five churches in Thailand. It is the meek and humble that God chose to use in church planting. Our new team here in Chiayi has much to learn!

Teacher Comes to Christ

Another teacher at a public elementary school has come to Christ! Halleluia! The Lord has answered our prayers. Mindy recently prayed to receive Christ as her personal Savior and Lord during our one-on-one Bible study in the school.

Our contact with her started seven years ago when she was the second grade teacher of Desmond, one of our MKs. Michele, Desmond’s mom and fellow SEND missionary, had volunteered to do an early morning storytelling with the class. Michele told a Bible story and gave me the privilege of assisting her by teaching a simple song and some English vocabulary. Later, on special occasions, Michele and her husband Bobby would do special programs for the class with the help of Tanzi Church.

Even when Desmond moved on to another grade and another school, Mindy kept in contact, inviting the church to hold special programs in her classes at Christmas and Easter. However, in the five plus years since then, she never seemed to have time or interest in personal Bible study.

But beginning last summer, something changed. Mindy finally agreed to meet weekly for Bible study. What a joy! God has truly been at work in her heart all these years. The efforts put into this school outreach have gained another harvest – teacher Susan a few months ago, and now teacher Mindy! It is God’s doing! May He be glorified!

Pray for Mindy’s as well as Susan’s spiritual growth, for their consistent walk with the Lord and that their lives might shine brightly to those around them.

Remembering a life well lived

Alain Haudenschild writes, “We mourn the death of a German missionary but celebrating the life she led. The news article in Puli, Taiwan, this week said,

‘Residents of Puli Township, Nantou County, are mourning the death of a medical missionary who spent more than three decades caring for people there.
Alfhild Jenfen, who first came to Taiwan in 1962, passed away in Norway on Sunday, the Puli Christian Hospital said. She was 92. She will be remembered most notably for her efforts to change the lives of children suffering with polio, the hospital said.

‘Jenfen arrived to work at the hospital as a surgical anesthetist at a time when polio was prevalent among Aboriginal children in remote areas of the country. Jenfen met her husband Bjarne Gislefoss, who was working as a senior nurse at the hospital, and the two devoted themselves to treating Aboriginal children and members of the local community. The couple collected donations from abroad to establish a special unit for children with polio in 1966.

‘They also invited specialist physicians to visit Taiwan to work in the unit and arranged classes for children whose long hospital stays meant they missed out on schooling. Their efforts helped the hospital become a pioneer in the treatment of polio in Taiwan.’

“We lived in Puli ourselves for four years and also went through the time of the century earthquake with the Giselfosses. We were privileged to hear them talk of their beginnings in Puli and enjoyed fellowship with them many times. Maybe their uncompromising devotion to the LORD and his will for needy people around them is one of the special marks they left in Puli and among the many they trained.

“This woman finished her race and kept faith. She is also a reminder how much can be achieved with the Lord’s grace in ONE person’s life.”

We recently had a new visitor to the Fen Yuan Gospel Mission Church in which we serve. It was quite noticeable because we don't get many people off the street, just popping in to see what is going on. So you can imagine we were quite curious as we knew that God must working in her life for her to join our service. Dai Shio Fen was recently diagnosed with stage four liver cancer and she didn't know how to deal with this incredible blow to her life and family. Shio Fen grew up in a traditional family in a rural area of Chang Hua County where it is assumed that you will worship Matzu, the goddess of the sea when you have problems. But when Shio Fen went to the temple to ask Matzu to help her, she did not find peace like she had hoped. No one there cared for her and each time she left the temple she felt empty and a lack of peace. Shio Fen has a niece who has been attending an after school program that helps children of needy families with their homeowork. Our church serves in this ministry and Shio Fen decided to 'try out' those Christians who were caring for her niece. She was surprised to find that when she came to the church she felt peace and the love of others as they showed concern for her health problems. We didn't let her leave without praying for her and encouraging her. As she finished her third round of chemotherapy she began considering the claims of Christ and what it would cost for her to turn to Him in faith. We as a family had been praying for her. Grace Lin, a Taiwanese coworker in our church visited her and shared the love of Christ with her. Finally, on October 9, she again heard the claims of Christ and was drawn to put her faith in Jesus! She has already told her husband that she does not want to worship Matzu anymore. Shio Fen was drawn to an awareness of the Creator God and His love for her through the frailty of life. Pray for Shio Fen as she grows in her new life walking with Jesus and for her family to be moved to faith in Christ as her life is changed by Him.

God Prepares Hearts in Taiwan

Sunday, August 23, Mark and Ruth Harbour had the privilege of serving one of their supporting churches, the Chinese Christian Church of Baltimore. During the lunch hour they met a young man in his 20s - John - who had just followed the Lord in baptism in July. His joy spilled over as he shared how God had saved him. For a long time he had resisted the invitations of his friends to go to church. Although adjusting to life in the U.S. for university studies had its challenges, he felt he could manage alone. He did not need God.

Then he broke his leg. It caused him to realize how fragile and unpredictable life was. He began to go with his friends to church, and had long talks with the pastor. He read the Bible, and wanted to follow Jesus, but he worried about offending his parents in ShanHua, Tainan County - where Madzu and ancestor worship dominate life and thinking. Nevertheless, one night John gave his heart to Jesus. The very next morning, God used his parents to affirm his decision; his mother called from Taiwan and said, "What are you doing at home? You should be in church!"

Hallelujah! God is preparing to save the masses in Taiwan, to deliver them from spiritual darkness, and gloriously lead them into the light of Christ and new life. Shanhua, Tainan county, just happens to be one of the 60 towns which SEND International of Taiwan is committed to reaching with the Gospel. But the laborers are few. Therefore SEND missionaries are trusting God to raise up 10 new missionaries each year, and are calling for 119 workers to plant reproducing churches in 60 towns along Old Route 1 and 19.

To God be the glory; great things He is doing in Taiwan. Answer the Vision 119 call - join SEND International of Taiwan as Christ's Ambassadors to the least reached of Taiwan.

Healing deep wounds in Taiwan

For older Taiwanese people, even the mention of Japan brings up deep hurts and wounds from the Japanese occupation and World War II. Tina Lin is a missionary from Taiwan to Japan who has been back in her home country for home service. Tina writes:

“At the end July, I was invited to share with the sisters in a southern church here. I shared with them how God worked through the prayers of many to break through my struggle over being called to Japan, got me to the mission field and His grace during these five years of service there.

“As I finished, a grandmother in her 80's said to me, ‘I hate the Japanese fiercely!’ I stopped in my tracks and she continued, ‘The Japanese destroyed my family. They killed my father, my brother…; I hate the Japanese!’ My sharing that day had hooked the most hurtful memories in this grandma’s heart. After the meeting, I prayed with her for God to heal the deep wounds she carries from this hurt.

“I have shared or spoken nine times since returning to Taiwan and more than thirty have come to talk with me in a similar way. May God help me to not only bring the spiritual needs of Japan before people, but also to be a channel of healing and reconciliation.”
