Teaching the Next Generation

The little church we attend in Kiev continues to grow. Recently three young men were ordained as deacons--a first for this church. We had some guest speakers who preached about the role and responsibilities of deacons and one preached on dedicating ourselves to the Lord for His service from Romans 12:1 (“Present your bodies a living sacrifice...”).

I was seated by a young family that has been attending just a few months. Several in the church have begun highlighting significant verses in their Bibles and I watched this father pull out his marker and highlight this verse--perhaps the first time he has ever really thought about these words or maybe even read them. I have thought about those words many times through the years and probably heard dozens of sermons on them, and it was special to me to see them impacting a new generation--those words, and many others.

I preach there about once a month and lately I’ve been focusing on four words which (as a famous preacher once pointed out) pretty much sum up the Gospel: God, sin, Christ, faith. If you understand these four things, you understand the most important things in all of life. Without this understanding joy is impossible.

Believers spearhead economic progress in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine

Ivano-Frankivsk is a medium-sized city in western Ukraine where Dave Benzel taught recently. Dave says, “The downtown area has beautiful, old European-style architecture, but what is more special about this place is that this is the only place I know of in Ukraine where believers are sacrificing for other colleges. Several years ago SEND helped local Christians set up a business -- a lighting and electric store -- with the hope that the store could one day help finance the local Bible college. It only took a few years. They paid back all “loans” and no longer require help from others to run the college. In fact, the store did so well, the director wondered if more could be done. He mortgaged his home and bought a small building to set up another similar store on the other side of town, with the hope that the profits from this store could help other Ukrainian Bible colleges! With the economic 'crisis' the stores are not doing as well as before, but they are still turning a profit, and more than once in the past year they’ve given money to SEND to distribute to other colleges. Meanwhile their church is just about to begin construction on a building–only the second small evangelical church in a city of over 150,000. This area is perhaps the least reached in all of Ukraine. Pray that God would meet their needs as they sacrifice to meet the needs of others."
