Mission Distinctives

Two friends posing for a portraitWhat makes SEND International distinctive?

Every missions organization has distinctive characteristics – you want to work with a mission where you feel comfortable. Here are some of the distinctive features of SEND International.

Distinct history
SEND International was started as Far Eastern Gospel Crusade in a prayer meeting by a large group of young men and women who were part of World War II occupation forces in the Philippines and Japan. Their deep concern for the spiritual needs of Asia drove many of them to return to the United States, finish their education, form a missions organization and return to the Philippines and Japan as missionaries. In the early ‘70’s, another mission that had been started in the 1930’s in the Alaska wilderness, joined FEGC. The combined missions organizations became SEND International.

Distinctive charge
SEND’s mission is to mobilize God’s people and engage the unreached in order to establish reproducing churches. From the start, SEND International has focused on starting churches where none exist through evangelism, discipleship and leadership training. As a result, churches, institutions and training schools established by SEND are put under local leadership as soon as possible. Disciples become disciple makers, trained leaders train the next generation, and those who were touched by SEND’s mission effort become missionaries.

Distinctive structure
SEND International still reflects the group nature of the founding missionaries. Members have a voice in major changes or decisions in mission policy. Area councils and directors are elected by the area members. Most decisions are made as close to the situation as possible.

Distinctive membership
The “International” in the name of SEND speaks not only to the over 20 countries around the world where members serve but to the international nature of the membership. Some of SEND’s earliest missionaries were Asians who returned to their home countries to share the gospel with their war-ravaged fellow countrymen. Today, SEND members are recruited and sent from sending offices around the world. International missionaries also serve with SEND from partner agencies in countries where SEND does not have a sending council.
