Croatia
stretches from the Pannonian Plain in the east to the Adriatic Sea
along its southwestern border. The center of the country is mountainous.
Croatia also has over 1,000 islands, of which 66 are inhabited.
Total area--56, 691 square kilometers, with 5,835 kilometers of
coastline.
The population
of Croatia is estimated to be about four and half million. Most
of the people are Croats. Minorities include be Serbs, Hungarians,
Czechs, Slovaks, and Italians.
The capital,
Zagreb, with a population of about 750,000, is located in the north-central
part of the country. Lying on the southwest coast, the second largest
city, Split, has a population of only 190,000. It was founded as
