Dogs...
Dalmatia lies along the western coast of the area that is modern
day Croatia. Without moving an inch, the region has been a province
of Rome, of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and of Yugoslavia, and
now Croatia. Despite arguments to the contrary, Dalmatia hotly contests
its right to be considered the original home of the popular black-and-white
spotted dogs made popular by Disney.
Pencils...
The world's first mechanical pencil was invented in Zagreb in 1906
by Slavoljub Penkala. He held patents for at least 69 other inventions.

Accounts vary regarding the origin of the cravat, forerunner of
the modern necktie, but all seem to give the credit to Croatian
soldiers. During the 1600s, these military men wore distinctive
knotted neckerchiefs. Croatian "kravata" caught the attention
of the French, probably during the reign of Louis XIV, and the fashion
caught on. The word "cravat" entered the English language
in 1656. For a good version of the cravat's origin, go to http://www.croata.hr/en/hystory.htm
