Government policy allows Chinese to exercise religious beliefs within certain guidelines. Buddhists, Taoists, Muslims, and Christians do practice, but some groups are prohibited. As many as 70 million people have some religious faith. Islam claims 20 million adherents. Temples, mosques, and churches are open to the public, but public worship is frowned upon or even discouraged. Unauthorized or underground religious activities have led to imprisonment and other restrictions. Unique local religions can flourish in small towns, especially in the east; they may focus on one god or form of worship, and they often include elements of Taoism, Buddhism, and ancestor veneration.
