Opportunities
Bulgaria has
been a socialist country for decades but now is governed by a democratically
elected government. The whole nation is strongly influenced by the
Bulgarian Orthodox Church. With the demise of communism and the
changes that have taken place in government over the past years,
there has been economic instability. Inflation was rampant until
the government took action to tie the local currency to the Deutsche
mark. Due to the economic hardships, churches have used humanitarian
aid as a tool to reach many people with the gospel.
In the past
few years, there has been a growing desire among evangelical churches
to evangelize and plant new churches throughout the country. In
early 1998 there were about 900 evangelical churches among 65 denominations
that are members of the Bulgarian Evangelical Alliance.
Vision and
status
SEND International
works closely with evangelicals in Bulgaria in a number of ministries.
The Bulgarian Biblical Academy, established while Bulgaria was still
under communism, now has a resident campus in Sofia, and continues
many extension campuses throughout the country. SEND has come alongside
this training institute to provide administrative assistance and
Bible teachers in the resident, extension and pastoral training
programs. SEND also works with the Alliance for Saturation Church
Planting to provide training for pastors and Christian workers involved
in evangelism and church planting.
SEND has effectively
used short-term workers both at the Biblical Academy and in summer
teams working alongside churches in country areas to gain new contacts
through English camps.
