Geography
Bulgaria is the oldest surviving European state to keep its original name. Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Slavs and Bulgars all left their mark on the landscape and culture. From tombs dating to 3 BC to a modern nation taking its place in Europe, Bulgaria marches on.
Bulgaria rests on the eastern edge of Europe. Natural barriers form half of Bulgaria’s borders; the Danube River separates Bulgaria from its northern neighbor, Romania, and the eastern edge is cut off by the Black Sea. It also shares borders with Greece, Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee and mostly mountainous with plains in the northern and central region. The climate resembles the Midwest with cool, damp winters and hot, dry summers.
