Tough Assignment

After graduating from Alaska Bible College, a graduating family became missionaries with a sister mission and were assigned to a village in Western Alaska. The ministry in the village was a very difficult one for this couple and their three daughters. God has protected them. They are known in the village as people who can be trusted. After six years of faithful witness in this village, God has blessed this ABC graduate with three new believers to disciple. They rejoiced this summer as the husband baptized three native women and his youngest daughter . . . Immediately following the baptism, at least one began to suffer persecution from members of the community.”

Sobered Up

Just a few days ago, a young single mother from the village called. She said, ‘I have sobered up and want to give my life back to the Lord. I need some help. Will you please help me?’ So I finished up our family’s dinner and went over to her apartment. She needed help cleaning to make a home for her son to move back into. We first prayed that the Lord would help us organize everything, and He did! As we worked, we talked about what it means to serve the Lord. After we finished, it was a joy to tell her about true salvation and repentance. I told her how the Lord pulled me out of the pit of sin, and that if she would come to Him, He would not turn her away. We prayed together and she said, ‘I feel so much better.’ Praise the Lord!

Block Party for God

FOR THE THIRD year we have had the privilege of conducting a Vacation Bible School that we call an Evening Bible Camp at a community center. We had about 100 children who listened to Bible stories, played games and made Christian crafts. Many of them had attended other events that we have sponsored. It was so encouraging to hear their comments . . . ‘I know you!’ ‘I still have the Bible you gave me last year.’ ‘I don’t need to talk to a counselor about becoming a Christian. I did that last year.’ We rejoiced with the 35 kids who made decisions for Christ this year.

As a result of how well the Bible Camp went, the community center director asked us to help him organize a block party for the neighborhood around the Center. We were able to get nine Christian organizations and churches to set up activities for the block party. Two of them actually shared the gospel and 17 children made decisions for Christ! This was a family activity and about 300 people enjoyed the evening.

Village Kids' Club

Our village KIDS’ CLUB has started again. We have some of the same skilled helpers from Alaska Bible College as last year, which is good. The kids crave stability and when the helpers change constantly it is hard on them. We started out right away with about 25 kids! That was wonderful.

One young man had given his life to the Lord while I was home in Germany and I did not know about it. But I saw a change in his behavior and found out what had changed him. Isn’t our God awesome! He is the one who can truly change lives. Pray that many more will follow.

God Had a Plan

“GOD HAD A PLAN at camp in western Alaska. Ever been a camp counselor or maybe you had 10 grandchildren over for a week? It was a great week but you were exhausted by Friday and not feeling well. You were looking forward to everyone leaving and enjoying a relaxing evening and a good night’s rest. That was the feeling at camp the evening we were talking to the camp director working with the SMP western team. When all your campers fly in, camp can only end when the weather is good enough to fly them home. Their program was finished but now they had all but four of their campers for at least another night because of bad weather. The camp director was to speak and come up with a program in 10 minutes from when we were talking and had no idea what to say and do. ‘Please pray.’

The Glennallen Summer Missions team was at our house for Bible study and prayer. So pray we did! Big time! Later we heard that was their best night of camp. God gave the director a powerful message about a mosquito and applied spiritual lessons. That night the campers opened up more in cabin discussions than any other time. A discouraged counselor saw one of her campers accept the Lord, helping her realize God can use her in Alaska this summer.

Touching the World in Alaska

God gave us another fantastic summer at the Seaman’s Mission in Seward, Alaska. Around 60 men and women from all over the world made decisions for Christ! Here are just three of their stories.

Franklin, a 33-year-old from Nicaragua, brought Carlos. ‘Here’s my friend, Carlos, from Costa Rica. He needs to hear about Jesus and being born again.’ Franklin had been raised by a Christian mother and had grown up in a Baptist church in Nicaragua. Franklin said, ‘Now I’m not yet a born-again, but my mom always prays for me, and I know that it is important.’ His friend, Carlos, stood with awe as it was read to him about God making a way to rescue him from sin and death. Carlos did receive Christ. He immediately called home and told his wife and daughter that he had been born again in Christ.

One month later, Carlos said, ‘This is Franklin and he needs to talk with you today!’ This time Franklin repented by changing his mind and trusting in Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sin and eternal life in Christ! We can just imagine the many times a mom and a church prayed, ‘Help Franklin accept you and use him to bring others.’ We see God smiling as He answered it in reverse order.

Rod, a 30-year-old Filipino, said that he had not read the Bible so he did not know what it said, but he wanted to know and would be glad if someone would show him. He said that he and his friend had tried to live this life and could not. After reading Scripture and praying, Rod was born again in Christ. ‘Now I want to go home and tell my family about this.’

A 36-year-old man from Thailand was handed a New Testament in his language. He asked for help to understand its message. He read many Scriptures about man's need and God’s plan to rescue man through Jesus. Several times he was asked, ‘Have you ever heard this before? No, no, I never heard this. Now I accept Jesus. I believe this. I receive Him! Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing these words with me!’
